Planting Instructions for Lily Bulbs

Site

Well-drained soil in full sun or light afternoon shade

Soil Preparation

Loosen soil to about 30 cm depth so roots can spread and bulbs stabilise

(Optional) Mix in compost before planting

Planting Depth & Orientation

Place bulbs point-up and cover with 10 cm of soil

Spacing

Leave at least 3× the bulb’s width between each bulb

Moisture & Mulch

Plant bulbs immediately on arrival; don’t let them dry out

Cover soil with mulch or ground cover to keep roots cool

Water regularly, especially during dry spells

Staking

Insert a stake at planting time if you plan to support stems; tie stems to stake as they grow

Fertiliser

At planting: work in Blood & Bone or a general-purpose fertiliser (no manure)

Every few months: side-dress with bulb food or slow-release fertiliser to boost flowering

After-Flower Care

Let leaves die back naturally, then cut stems at ground level—this feeds next season’s bulb

If using as cut flowers, leave at least one-third of the stem with leaves on the plant

Longevity

Lilies can stay in the same spot for 4–5 years before re-planting

Planting in Pots

Use a quality potting mix (never garden soil) in a large pot with good drainage

Repot every 3 years with fresh mix

Fertilise once a year and keep well watered
